Summer Camps

Science Camp – Level 1
Date: June 25th – June 29th
Time: 9:00 – 12:00 (Morning Session)
1:00 – 4:00 (Afternoon Session)
Age: Going into 1st – 3rd grades
Fee: $85 per child, $80 per child for APHC
Location: Longway Planetarium
Description:
Animal Explorations – Fur, feathers, scales, or skin; what’s your favorite animal in? Investigate how adaptations help animals survive in their environments. See if you can camouflage a wooden snake and make and take a toad home for your garden.
Energy! – Make things move with activities that explore light, sound, electricity, and magnetism. Use mirrors to reflect a beam of light, explore the colors of the rainbow, and see the parts of an eye. Make an obnoxious noise maker while learning about vibrations, pitch, and volume. Light up some Christmas bulbs and play with magnets.
Science and Art – Create beautiful projects to take home while exploring the science of art. Use the sun’s energy to make a beautiful picture, paint with bubbles, and build a sculpture from clean items rescued from the trash.
Landforms – Investigate Earth! Make a layered Landforms book while learning about the Earth’s features. Work as a team to build a model volcano and watch it erupt. Download the registration form. 

Camp Alpha Omega for Girls – The Zoo and You!
Date: June 25th – 27th
Time: 9:00 – 12:00
Age: Girls going into 3rd – 6th grades
Fee: $60 per child, $55 per child for APHC 
Location: Longway Planetarium
Description: Join Longway Planetarium as we partner with some of Genesee County’s best teachers! Guest teachers from the Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society will be on hand as we welcome Potter Park Zoo and their live critters! Visit with an owl and dissect owl pellets, walk to Mott Community College to meet the Dean of Math and Science and tour MCC’s science facilities. Try your hand at animal-themed hands-on activities. Limited scholarship funds are available thanks to Alpha Omega. Call for details.  Download the registration form.  

Science Camp – Level 2
Date: July 9th – July 13th
Time: 9:00 – 12:00
Age: Going into 4th – 6th grades
Fee: $85 per child, $80 per child for APHC 
Location: Longway Planetarium
Description:
Biomes – The Zoo called and needs you to help them design an environment for an animal. Draw an animal from a bag and use the internet and books to research the type of biome the animal belongs in. Then, using craft and construction materials, build an environment for the animal to live in.
Take Apart – We have a collection of old appliances, toys, and electronics and a bunch of screw drivers! Dissect a toaster, dismantle a hair dryer, and de-construct and alarm clock; can you put them back together again?
Design Challenge – Design and test a ramp using different surfaces to speed up or slow your object down. Build a tower that supports weight using straws. Make a paper tower that holds a book. Design a container that will protect an egg from a long fall.
Sun, Moon, and Stars – Use the sun’s energy to make a solar balloon fly, make a UV bead mosaic, and investigate how dark colors absorb the sun’s energy while light colors reflect it. Take a tour through the constellations while designing a constellation poster. Download the registration form.  

Kinder-science Camp – Little Scientists
Date: July 9th – 11th
Time: 1:00 – 4:00
Age: Going into Pre-K-Kindergarten
Fee: $60 per child, $55 per child for APHC 
Location: Longway Planetarium
Description: Science fun for little ones! Held in the Planetarium’s Family Science Room, this camp will provide opportunities for free exploration and independent play as well as structured hands-on science and math activities. Catch a rainbow in your hand and on a piece of paper. Practice your measuring and pouring skills while making an oil and water mystery bottle. Play with magnets. Kids will assemble a science tool kit to take home with them at the end of camp. Grown-ups are welcome to stay and play. Download the registration form.  

Girls through Time Camp
Date: July 16th – 19th
Time: 9:00 – 12:00
Age: Going into 3rd – 6th Grade
Fee: $75 per child, $70 per child for APHC

Comix Camp
Date: July 17th- 19th
Time: 1:00 – 4:00
Age: Going into 5th – 8th grade

Medieval Camp
Date: July 24th- 26th
Time: 1:00 – 3:00pm
Age: Going into 1st – 3rd grade
Fee: $65 per child, $60 per child for APHC

Description: Dragons, Knights and Castles! During this 3 day camp, design and paint your own shield, make a helmet, build a catapult and then help us storm the castle! Download the registration form.  

History Training Camp
Date: July 30th – Aug 2nd
Time: 9:00 – 12:00
Age: Going into 5th – 8th Grade
Fee: $60 per child, $55 per child for APHC

Description: Go behind the scenes at Sloan Museum! Work with the Programming and Collections staff to learn how to research and write labels, clean artifacts, and set up a group exhibit to be displayed the Museum. Download the registration form.  

Moccasins to Cars
Date: June 27th
Time: 1:00 – 3:00pm
Age: Going into 1st – 3rd grade
Fee: $8.00, $7.00 per child for APHC

Description: Explore how transportation in Michigan has changed through the years. Travel by foot, animal, boat, carriage and motorcar as we explore the how the means of transportation has changed. The tour will start in Sloan Museum and end after a short walk to the Buick Gallery where we will have a snack in the Soda Shop. Download the registration form.  

Story Time in Wisners
Date: June 28th

The Mighty Mac
Date: July 2nd

Discover Density

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Description: Where does your garbage go? Find out how a landfill works while investigating how reducing, reusing, and recycling household waste can help the environment. See what you can build by reusing clean “trashables”. Download the registration form.  

Scratch (Two Days)
Date: July 10th – 11th
Time: 1:00 – 4:00pm
Age: Going into 5th – 8th grade

Description: New to Scratch? Not sure what Scratch is all about? Join us for this hands-on introduction to Scratch. Learn to use MIT’s Scratch computer programming language and have a blast creating multimedia stories and interactive games while building math and technology skills. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their own laptops, original stories, and game ideas to the camp.
Day 1: Introduction to Scratch and basic programming skills.

Pond Life
Date: July 10th

Advanced Scratch

In the Air! Kites and Planes
Date: July 16th
Time: 9:00am – 12:00pm

Description: Explore air pressure and flight while enjoying fast-paced and fun hands-on activities. Crush a can and watch a marshmallow “grow” in a vacuum chamber. Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes!

Microscopic Investigations
Date: July 16
Time: 1:00 – 4:00pm
Age: Going into 5th – 8th grade

Description: Learn the basics of microscope use. Learn microscope parts, how to prepare wet and dry mount sides, and observe microscopic organisms. Explore the structure of cells while working together to build a cell model. Download the registration form.  

The Tradesmen
Date: July 17th
Time: 9:00 – 11:00am
Age: Going into 4th – 6th grade

Description: Put yourself in the shoes of the community tradesmen during the 1800’s. Learn about the Blacksmith and Tinsmith and their importance in the community. Become a Tinsmith Apprentice and make a tin punching craft to take home. Download the registration form.

Description: Melt in your mouth, not in your hands? Watch what happens to the colorful candy M & M shell when you put it in hot and cold water. Watch what happens to lemonade powder when mixed with water. Mix up a salty solution, and then get your salt back again. These activities will have you measuring, pouring, and mixing up fun science!
