Summer Camps at Sloan*Longway
Here are the 2012 Summer Camps for Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium! Also below are our A La Carte programs, so you can create your own summer camp, based on your schedule.
Summer Camps
Science Camp – Level 1
Date: June 25th – June 29th
Time: 9:00 – 12:00 (Morning Session)

Description:
Animal Explorations – Fur, feathers, scales, or skin; what’s your favorite animal in? Investigate how adaptations help animals survive in their environments. See if you can camouflage a wooden snake and make and take a toad home for your garden.
Energy! – Make things move with activities that explore light, sound, electricity, and magnetism. Use mirrors to reflect a beam of light, explore the colors of the rainbow, and see the parts of an eye. Make an obnoxious noise maker while learning about vibrations, pitch, and volume. Light up some Christmas bulbs and play with magnets.
Science and Art – Create beautiful projects to take home while exploring the science of art. Use the sun’s energy to make a beautiful picture, paint with bubbles, and build a sculpture from clean items rescued from the trash.
Landforms – Investigate Earth! Make a layered Landforms book while learning about the Earth’s features. Work as a team to build a model volcano and watch it erupt. Download the

Camp Alpha Omega for Girls – The Zoo and You!
Date: June 25th – 27th

Age: Girls going into 3rd – 6th grades

Description: Join Longway Planetarium as we partner with some of Genesee County’s best teachers! Guest teachers from the Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society will be on hand as we welcome Potter Park Zoo and their
live critters! Visit with an owl and dissect owl pellets, walk to Mott Community College to meet the Dean of Math and Science and tour MCC’s science facilities. Try your hand at animal-themed hands-on activities.

Science Camp – Level 2
Date: July 9th – July 13th
Time: 9:00 – 12:00
Age: Going into 4th – 6th grades

Location: Longway Planetarium
Description:
Biomes – The Zoo called and needs you to help them design an environment for an animal. Draw an animal from a bag and use the internet and books to research the type of biome the animal belongs in. Then, using craft and construction materials, build an environment for the animal to live in.
Take Apart – We have a collection of old appliances, toys, and electronics and a bunch of screw drivers! Dissect a toaster, dismantle a hair dryer, and de-construct and alarm clock; can you put them back together again?
Design Challenge – Design and test a ramp using different surfaces to speed up or slow your object down. Build a tower that supports weight using straws. Make a paper tower that holds a book. Design a container that will protect an egg from a long fall.
Sun, Moon, and Stars – Use the sun’s energy to make a solar balloon fly, make a UV bead mosaic, and investigate how dark colors absorb the sun’s energy while light colors reflect it. Take a tour through the constellations while designing a constellation poster.

Kinder-science Camp – Little Scientists
Date: July 9th – 11th

Description: Science fun for little ones! Held in the Planetarium’s Family Science Room, this camp will provide opportunities for free exploration and independent play as well as structured hands-on science and math activities. Catch a rainbow in your hand and on a piece of paper. Practice your measuring and pouring skills while making an oil and water mystery bottle. Play with magnets. Kids will assemble a science tool kit to take home with them at the end of camp. Grown-ups are welcome to stay and play.

Girls through Time Camp
Date: July 16th – 19th

Description: Go behind the scenes at Sloan Museum! Work with the Programming and Collections staff to learn how to research and write labels, clean artifacts, and set up a group exhibit to be displayed the Museum.

Description: New to Scratch? Not sure what Scratch is all about? Join us for this hands-on introduction to Scratch. Learn to use MIT’s Scratch computer programming language and have a blast creating multimedia stories and interactive games while building math and technology skills. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their own laptops, original stories, and game ideas to the camp.
Day 1: Introduction to Scratch and basic programming skills.
Day 2: Stories with single backgrounds and an interactive maze.

Description: Compete in the “Clean Water Challenge”! Select materials to build a filter that will clean dirty water while learning how water from Lake Huron arrives at the Planetarium sink clean and ready to use. Build a model of a groundwater system to see how your well works. Develop a plan to get water from its source to a city in the most efficient way.

Rockets (Two Days)

Description: Build and fly your own model rockets! On Day 1 we’ll construct “Alpha” and “Viking” rockets. On Day 2 we’ll launch our rockets; first with a smaller “test” engine, and if everything checks out, we’ll launch with a more powerful engine.
No prior model rocket building experience necessary.

Description: Back by popular demand! Wear your swimsuit and bring a towel! Cool off with several hands-on stations in Sloan Museum’s courtyard. Do some laundry the old fashioned way, have a water balloon war, play on the slip and slide, pour, spray, and run with this good old-fashioned fun!
