Sonic Comics Sketch Event

Comics Sketch Event Dec 27-29, 2011


The all-new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic offers drivers fuel efficiency, comfort and safety but for a few days later this month the Sonic will be an art subject at Sloan*Longway. The Sonic Comics Sketch Event is scheduled for December 27-29, 2011. The event will feature more than eight comic book artists who will use a specially-wrapped Sonic as a canvass for their artistic creations. Working in shifts during the three days, the artists will draw and paint their comic characters on the four-door hatchback. Three days passes are $15 for adults and children, while a one-day pass is $9 for adults and $6 for children.

Artists attending the event include:
Matt Feazell: Creator of Cynical Man, whose work has appeared worldwide including a long running feature in The Disney Adventures Magazine.
William Stolpin: Fantasy illustrator and fine artist who has two of his art prints on permanent display at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C.
Susan Van Camp: Fantasy illustrator and painter who was instrumental in creating the premiere deck of Magic The Gathering role-playing game cards.
Patrick Hardin: International cartoonist whose work has appeared in such publications as Scientific American and Good Housekeeping.
• As well as many regular contributors to Flint Comix such as Editor-In-Chief Randy Zimmerman, and Spark artists Brian Hackney, Justin Faber, and Brian Germain.

Sonic Sketch Event Class Schedule as of 12/20/11
Visitors under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Classes are limited to 15 people only. Call 810.237.3450 to get your name on the list to ensure your spot. If the class is not full, walk-ups welcome. Each class will last 60-90 minutes.

TUESDAY DECEMBER 27th

10:30: CARTOONING FOR EVERYONE!
With Randy Zimmerman
Anyone can draw cartoons and instructor Randy Zimmerman gives a basic instruction in cartooning using basic shapes and curved lines. Students draw a “classic” cartoon body, and then two popular cartoon characters (Mickey Mouse and Spongebob) by following examples from the board.

With Brian Hackney
It’s easy and fun to draw cartoons and students are shown and encouraged to create their own cartoons using a couple of fun games geared to get the imagination working!

Cartooning with basic shapes, student follow along as they cartoon some classic robot, Including Rosie from The Jetsons and a few other famous robots from cartoons!

Basic instruction on drawing comics. More than “just” superheroes, this class covers foreshortening, perspective, scene-building, and more tips and techniques you’ll need to put your characters in as realistic a setting as possible.

With Gabriel Cantu
Learn the fine art of working digitally when working on your comic/manga art. Topics include some cool Photoshop techniques: Coloring, Inking, and a little image manipulation. Then, if time allows there’ll be a few other programs besides. Learn firsthand from a Photoshop madman.

The unique art of “Manga” (Japanese influenced comics) is display, and demonstrated. Make your next cartoon drawing a Manga Cartoon with these helpful pointers and demonstrations. Students are encouraged to draw their own manga-influenced character.

Comic Book writer Jwan Jordan offers his experience and advice on writing for comics. Story structure, script formatting, plotting, and characterization are all covered. A genuine “How To” for potential comic and sequential art writers.

With Brian Hackney
Superhero artist Brian Hackney shows how to draw Superheroes in exciting and dynamic ways. Basic Comic Book Hero anatomy is displayed and students are encouraged to create their own Superhero using pencil, paper, and their imagination!

With Gemma Keech (instructor change from previous listing)
The art of telling a story combining words and pictures, Graphic Novels are now a recognized literary form, and Gabriel Cantu discusses and shows you their inner workings and discusses the steps that you can do to make your own graphic novel, or tell your own story using Sequential Art. Remember, you don’t have to be a great artist to do this, and with a little instruction you’ll be surprised to see how easy it is to tell a story with pictures.

You’ve seen them in the newspaper, now YOU get to draw your own comic strip with the help of some quick, easy lessons in cartooning, timing, and storytelling. Students work on their own short four-panel strip, usually with some crazy results. You don’t have to be a great artist to draw a comic strip, just be able to tell a story and get your point across on paper.
